BOEM Finalizes First Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale Since Deepwater Horizon Tragedy

The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management issued the final notice of sale for Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 218 on Nov. 10, 2011. To be held in New Orleans in December, the Western Gulf Planning Area sale encompasses 3,913 blocks covering more than 21 million acres.
This sale follows BOEM’s completion of a supplemental environmental impact statement analyzing the effects of the Deepwater Horizon spill on the Western Gulf of Mexico. BOEM Director Tommy Beaudreau said: “The decision to hold this sale was made after careful analysis of the best scientific information available regarding the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.”
